Barbara Kruger Critique

1)   What do you see in this piece of art (describe it)?

In the image with the message "You can't drag your money into the grave with you," I see an empty pair of shoes, which to me means that someone is gone.  It can also mean that this person is not leaving any impact or any positive impact on the society that they have left.  With the message, I think that the person had the ability and financial stability to help but they were over conservative and left without helping.

2)  What kind of message is the artist giving in this piece of art?

The message "You can't drag your money into the grave with you," means that people in society that have money do not spend it wisely and they do not normally spend in ways that benefit society.  I also think that through this message Kruger is saying that she feels people are greedy with their money, thinking that since they have it, it is theirs and always will be.  However, we all know that we cannot take our possessions with us after we die, yet people still conserve everything they have and do not use what they have to benefit others.

3)    Do you like or dislike Kruger’s work? Why?

I really enjoy Kruger's work and the messages that it portrays to the people that see it.  I like that Kruger is able to, in a creative and very effective way, critique what is wrong in our society.  I personally fine her messages very inspiring to try and make a difference in my own life and community towards the issues she has pointed out.  I feel that if more people saw and understood Kruger's art, our society and world could be a much happier place.
